Most ranged spells must have a clear line of sight between caster and target. The easiest way to take care of line of sight is to use the combination of shift-R. It measures the distance and shows line of sight.
The exact mechanism can easiest be explained from the images below. A line is drawn from the center of the caster square to the center of the target square. Any square that the line crosses must not be blocked by another character or an high obstacle such as a tree. Note however that a tuft of grass, a fence or similar does not block line of sight. It is wise to learn which tiles block and which do not.

The following spells (and only them) ignore line of sight and can with other words be cast over other characters and obstacles:
